NIE for Non-Residents vs. Residents
There is a key distinction between a non-resident NIE and a resident NIE (TIE/Green Certificate):
Non-Resident NIE: A simple fiscal number on a white paper certificate. This is what you need for property purchases, bank accounts, and tax obligations. It does not grant you the right to live in Spain for more than 90 days in any 180-day period.
Resident NIE / Green Certificate (EU citizens): If you are an EU citizen planning to live in Spain for more than 3 months, you must register on the Registro Central de Extranjeros and obtain the green residency certificate (Certificado de Registro de Ciudadano de la Unión). This has a different process and requires proof of economic means, health insurance, or employment.
TIE Card (non-EU citizens): Non-EU nationals who obtain a visa (work, study, non-lucrative, Golden Visa) will receive a Tarjeta de Identidad de Extranjero — a biometric card that replaces the paper NIE.
