Norwegian Succession Law for Expats in Spain
Norwegian succession law for Scandinavian expats in Spain — pliktdelsarv, skifte, and how to plan your estate across both countries.
Norway has a significant expat community on the Costa Blanca, particularly in the Alfaz del Pi and Altea areas.
Norwegian Forced Heirship (Pliktdelsarv)
Norwegian law grants children a forced share (pliktdelsarv) of two-thirds of the estate, capped at a specific amount per child.
The Skifte Process
Norwegian probate (skifte) can be private (privat skifte) or public (offentlig skifte). For assets in Spain, a separate Spanish procedure is needed.
Norway and EU Succession Regulation
Important: Norway is NOT an EU member and has not adopted the EU Succession Regulation 650/2012. This means different rules apply for Norwegian nationals.
Choice of Law
While Norwegians cannot rely on the EU Regulation, the Nordic Succession Convention and bilateral agreements may apply.
